Information Technology

The Head of Information Technology is Miss Hornsby. There are two other IT teachers, these are Mrs Hesketh and Mr Collier. The faculty also has a Network Technician, Mr Taylor and a Network Manager, Mrs Thompson.
In the Business Suite there are 56 networked pentium computers. They are RM Accelerator 266 and all run Windows 98. We have excellent software including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Excel. Corel Draw 7 and much more. Peripherals on this network include Scanners, Digital Camera, Printers, LCD Projector and Interactive Whiteboard.

The Business Suite of 56 RM Connect 2.3 multimedia networked stations is used extensively for teaching discrete Information Technology lessons and for cross-curricular work. This facility incorporates an interactive white board and LCD projector for presentations. This network has recently been expanded to incorporate Design Technology and cabling has been connected to the staff room. The operating system for this network is NT4 Server and Windows 98. The cabling infrastructure has a star networking topology integrating multiple hubs with a UTP Cat 5 solution. Discrete lessons are taught to all years.

Year Seven: Pupils have two fifty minute lessons of Information Technology per six day cycle. Pupils cover the full range of software. All pupils produce a "Year Seven Guide to Southlands" towards the end of the year.

Year Eight: Pupils follow an extensive programme of ICT capability using desktop publishing, presentation and Office 97 software. All pupils give a PowerPoint presentation to the class. Year Eight have one discrete lesson per six day cycle.

Year Nine: Pupils concentrate upon preparing for Key Stage Four in one lesson per six day cycle. Activities include creating web pages using HTML format, user guides, databases and spreadsheets.

Years Ten and Eleven: All pupils follow IT in Key Stage Four for one discrete lesson per six day cycle. All students follow the Short Course GCSE programme. Students can also follow the full GCSE in the option blocks. In Key Stage Four, students are encouraged to link their coursework tasks to community based design problems.
