Hailed by many as the future of English goalkeeping, he is a youngster with a huge weight of expectancy on his shoulders.
He progressed through the youth ranks at Ipswich until breaking into the first-team in May 1995, making his debut against Coventry as a 17-year-old.
In the following season he made the Portman Road number one shirt his own, eventually earning a call-up to the England youth team.
A step up to the England Under-21 team was just a matter of time and he was soon making that jersey his own as well.
He has collected 11 caps at that level to-date and the next step up is again surely only a matter of not if, but when.
In November 1998 he was selected by Glenn Hoddle to join up with the full squad for the first time for the friendly against the Czech Republic and he made it on to the bench.
Since then he has split call-ups to the Under-21s with being selected as cover for David Seaman and Nigel Martyn in Keegan's full squad and he has learnt a great deal from this experienced duo.
He remains at Ipswich for the time being, but should the Nationwide One side fail to win promotion again this year, he will surely move to a bigger Premiership club.
He could yet force his way into Keegan's final 22, but will find it hard, for the moment at least, to move up from his third-choice status.
