1998-99 was yet another consistent season for Gareth at Aston Villa, as he continued to captain the side successfully, especially when they led the Premiership for a considerable period of time. With the exception of just one game, he played a major role in the centre of the Villa defence, first in guiding Gareth Barry through his first full campaign, and then having to hold the unit together following Ugo Ehiogu's absence due to injury. After scoring his first ever goal for England, against Luxembourg, in October, he was surprisingly demoted to the subs' bench for the Czech and Poland matches, but he never let it get to him and he just got on with the job in hand. Never one to allow a striker to bustle him out of his stride, comfortable on the ball, while looking to make the right pass, and always making himself available to his team mates, he signed a five-year contract in October which should effectively keep him at Villa Park for the rest of his career.
As long as he doesn't take a penalty, we'll be alright!
