Once again, David was a model of consistency behind the ever-green Arsenal back four in 1998-99, keeping a high percentage of clean sheets. Very relaxed and composed, both on and off the field, he plays a big part in the tremendous team spirit which exists at Highbury. With safe hands, and a strong kick from both hand and dead-ball situations, he is still regarded as the number-one goalkeeper in England, despite the worrying back and rib injuries that caused him to miss some games last season. However, on regaining full fitness, he was back to his best for both club and country. Despite missing a large part of the season, David has retained the number one spot for England. He missed the opening two months of the season but replaced Alex Manninger in the defeat at West Ham in early October. He returned for two months which took in the vital England games before losing out to another injury, however he returned over the Christmas period.
