A prolific Manchester United goalscorer who can play as an out-and-out striker, or in central midfield, Paul returned to England as one of the great successes of the 1998 World Cup campaign. An ever present during the early stages of last season, he scored important goals in successive games against Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the Champions' League, before hitting the winner against Liverpool in September. With further strikes against Brondby, Aston Villa, and Middlesbrough, he was given a mid-season break by Alex Ferguson in January, which helped to recharge his batteries. Coming back refreshed to score United's vital winner against Inter Milan in the San Siro, which took the Reds through to the European Cup semi finals, he then hit a hat trick playing for England against Poland in the European championship's qualifier at Wembley. In peak form as the campaign reached its exciting climax, his yellow-card offence in the European Cup semi final against Juventus ruled him out of the final. Despite his immense disappointment, he remained one of United's key players, and played an inspiring role in the FA Cup final at Wembley, scoring the club's deciding goal, which completed the second leg of an historic trebble
