Over the past 14 months, 49 teams have battled it out for the 14 remaining places in Euro 2000. The 49 teams were split into nine qualifying groups. England were placed among Poland and Sweden, Scotland with Czech Republic and Estonia, Republic of Ireland with Croatia and Yugoslavia, Northern Ireland with Turkey and Germany while Wales faced Denmark and Italy.

The winners of each group qualified automatically along with the best second placed team. The remaining eight second place teams faced each other in four play-offs for the remaining four places.
