Arguably the most improved player in the first-team squad at Arsenal in 1998-99, proving to be a strong tackler and good passer of the ball, his increased strength, fitness and pace also enabled him to score some good quality goals. Although a natural attacking right-sided midfielder, he showed that he could comfortably revert to the centre of midfield, or drop to the right-full-back position. Rarely had a bad game, a feature recognised by him being voted the Supporters' Club "Player of the Year". Such was his improvement last season that many critics believed he should have been selected for the England World Cup squad in France. However, as his good form continued, he received a belated call-up to the England squad for the match against Poland, and made his international debut when coming on as a substitute.
