Fowler May Be Back In Time

England national team coach Kevin Keegan received a double boost in his EURO 2000™ preparations as Liverpool FC stars Robbie Fowler and Jamie Redknapp both impressed in further comeback games. Both players are now in contention for renewed first-team action, giving them up to five league games to prove their readiness for the EURO 2000™ Final Tournament.

Indeed, Fowler, making a cautious comeback after an ankle injury, scored an excellent goal in Liverpool FC’s 2-0 reserve victory over Manchester United FC. Fowler scored in the 19th minute and played for 81 minutes. Redknapp played for the full 90 minutes.

Fowler's club coach Gérard Houllier believes Fowler can have a big role to play at EURO 2000™. "Kevin will probably take five strikers to this major championship, and if Robbie is fit and back in time, I feel he can be England's trump card, " he said. "We are hopeful about his fitness now, although we will not take any chances, and he will certainly not be tired in the summer because he has been out of action for so long. "It can often happen that someone can come out of the pack to play a part in a championship like EURO 2000™.A good example was Paolo Rossi in the 1982 World Cup in Spain. He was a real surprise, but he scored the goals that helped Italy win the tournament."
