Fat Les to Sing England's Song
FAT LES' cover version of the classic hymn 'Jerusalem' is to be England's official song for the European Championships.
Now named Fat Les 2000 the trio, comprising actor Keith Allen, Blur bassist Alex James and artist Damien Hirst, lost out two years ago when their first single, 'Vindaloo' (which reached Number Two), failed to be chosen as the country's World Cup theme.
That year the English Football Association set its stamp of approval on 'On Top of the World', by the Spice Girls and Echo & The Bunnymen leader Ian McCulloch, featuring members of Ocean Colour Scene.
Now their rendition of 'Jerusalem', featuring the words of poet William Blake, has been chosen as this year's anthem. According to the Ananova website, a Football Association spokeswoman said that Fat Les 2000 beat off several rival tunes, including terrace chant 'Here We Go', to win the honour.
Allen said: "We always wanted to do Jerusalem. It's music that played a very important part in my, and countless other, childhoods. It's part of our history, but now we've brought it up to date for future generations.
"Everyone has heard 'Jerusalem'. Most of us have sung it and all of us know some of the words. Frankly, it's a cracking good song. It's a hymn, it's an anthem, it's there to be sung."
The new recording of 'Jerusalem', to be released through Parlophone Records on Monday May 29, features a 60-piece orchestra and four choirs -including a gospel choir, a children's choir and a gay male choir.
It will be accompanied by a Band Aid-style promotional video, featuring footage of the England team playing and an impromptu appearance by Michael Barrymore. Participating celebrities include bald Shooting Stars funnyman George Dawes.
