Nick Barmby in Provisional Squad
NICKY Barmby believes England will see a completely different player to the one who last turned out for his country almost four years ago.
The Everton star was one of the major shocks in Kevin Keegan's party named yesterday for matches against Brazil, Ukraine and Malta in the build-up to Euro 2000.
The 26-year-old midfielder, who last played for his country against Moldova in 1997, believes England will see a new-look Barmby. He said: ''I think I am a different player now than when I was last in the England set-up.
''I'm more relaxed about my football and although there will be nerves this time, when you are younger you are more apprehensive. Now you just try to savour the moment and make sure you enjoy every minute. I couldn't have come back into the England fold for a bigger game than Brazil in front of a full house at Wembley. But just to be involved in the squad again is a boost.''
Barmby has had an excellent season for Everton under boss Walter Smith and the Hull-born star claims his England recall is down to the way he has been treated by the Goodison Park chief this term. He said: ''I'm looking forward to the training and joining up with England. I believe my recall is down to having a long run in the side whereas in the past two or three years with injury, loss of form and the change of managers it has not been easy for me.
''This season the manager has played me in a set position. Walter has been fantastic. I've been playing week in week out and that has helped.''
Barmby also thanked Everton fans for championing his cause, saying: ''This is a great boost for me and for Everton too. ''It's a nice feeling finally getting back in and I can only thank our fans who have been chanting 'Barmby for England' for a long time this season.
''People have been telling me that I might have a shout for England again and although I believe in my own ability, this has come as a shock. I'm not really thinking any further ahead than the Brazil game. I intend having a great week training with England and world-class players.'
