A Manchester United right back, who is equally as adaptable as a central defender, Phil had a stop-start introduction to last season, after playing as a substitute in the Charity Shield opener against Arsenal at Wembley. Having then made his first full appearance of the campaign against Lodz in the Champions' Cup in August, he deputised for brother, Gary, and Denis Irwin in the next three games. Co-launching his book: For Club And Country with Gary in early September, he enjoyed an extended run in the side, and in November he netted his first ever goal in the Champions' League in United's 5-0 win over Brondby. After that run of nine successive games, however, he made only fleeting appearances in the side, though continuing to be a regular face on the sub's bench. Although given an extended run in February, rumours continued to abound about his long-term future at Old Trafford, but Alex Ferguson was quick to dispel such talk by giving him a massive vote of confidence, and he ended the season with European Cup, FA Cup, and Premier League winners medals, as did his brother. Made five international appearances for England in 1998-99.
