Club: Manchester United

A hard-tackling Manchester United full back, who is equally as effective in the centre of defence, Gary had a very busy summer in 1998, playing for England in the World Cup finals, then co-launching his book: For Club And Country, with his brother Phil in early September. Playing regularly throughout the 1998-99 campaign, he missed only two Premiership games up to the start of December, before being forced out of the Boxing Day encounter against Nottingham Forest, following his red-card offence against Tottenham earlier that month. He then missed three games in a row with a groin strain in January. Returning in time for the important FA Cup-tie against Liverpool, he really came to the fore in the latter stages of the European Cup, where he showed true international form before scoring his first Premiership goal in nearly two years, against Everton in March. As one of United's most inspirational players as they mounted their continued quest for major honours, and an automatic choice in Kevin Keegan's first England squad for the vital European qualifier against Poland in March, it is safe to say that he has virtually made that right-back spot his very own. Was selected by his fellow professionals for the PFA award-winning Premiership side in advance of the club's best-ever season, which saw them get their hands on the European Cup, FA Cup, and last but not least, the Premiership title. Gary's season did not really start until November as he had suffered a series of injuries before that. However since returning in the Champions League against Sturm Graz he has hardly missed a game and will still be relatively fresh as United chase honours on several fronts.
