Many have compared Steve McManaman's career to that of former Liverpool colleague John Barnes.Like Barnes, McManaman has been a shining light for the Reds at club level with his pace and wonderful dribbling skills but in the white shirt of England he's always proved something of an enigma. His best England displays came in Euro 96 when he was voted into the tournament's all-star squad and described by Pele as a future star. But despite that tribute from the Brazilian legend, McManaman played only a fleeting role in the World Cup in 1998 and has disappointed since with England despite Kevin Keegan clearly being a fan. After failing to win the medals his talent deserved at Liverpool, McManaman took advantage of the Bosman ruling to become one of Europe's highly paid players by moving to Real Madrid on a free transfer at the start of the 1999/2000 season. He started brightly for the Spanish giants but injuries have halted his progress.England will hope that his experiences at Madrid will give his game that extra edge and make him into a true world star.
