Recognised for many years as being one of the most consistent goalkeepers in England, Nigel has shown excellent form for Leeds since the day he signed for the club, and 1998-99 was no exception. The model of consistency, to list all of his superb saves would take too long, but his "Man of the Match" game in the 2-0 victory against Coventry City at Elland Road last December is one to stand out. Unfortunately, he had the misfortune to pick up a couple of injuries during the campaign. A rib injury suffered against Roma caused him to miss three games and, following a dive to make a brilliant full-length save in the 2-3 defeat at Manchester United, he missed a further game. "England's number one" is the chant often heard from the Leeds' followers, and Nigel picked up his ninth cap in a friendly against France. A vital part to the club's future success, everyone was delighted when he signed a two-year extension to his current contract, which already had 18 months to run. Was selected by his fellow professionals to take his place in the PFA award-winning Premiership side. Nigel is a regular in the Leeds side and the England squad this season. He is the only player in the title chasing side who has featured in every game so far. An excellent keeper with good reflexes and organisational strength he has played a big part in getting the Yorkshire side where they are this season - challenging for major honours.
