Controversy followed Graeme throughout 1998-99, beginning with clashes against Arsenal which saw Lee Dixon sent off for a nasty challenge on him, and then Graeme himself was dismissed, along with Blackburn's Sebastien Perez, after a contretemps at Ewood Park which cost him a three-match ban. His unfortunate season culminated in the unsavoury Robbie Fowler 'incident' in March which brought him another suspension. That having been said, this feisty left back again demonstrated that he was still England's first choice for the position, withstanding the challenges of Andy Hinchliffe and Philip Neville. At Chelsea he formed a particularly strong partnership with Celestine Babayaro on the left flank, and is a superb crosser of the ball who loves to get forward to link up with the attack. He showed this quality to perfection against Leeds in May at the Bridge, when he burst down the left wing and delivered an inch-perfect cross onto the head of Gustavo Poyet, who nodded home the only goal of the match to clinch Champions' League qualification. An injury in a home defeat by Arsenal has ruled Graeme out of contention for the past few months. Until this injury at the end of October, Graeme had featured in most of the Blues matches in his usual left wing back role. He will hope to be back in action
