A two-footed striker with power and pace, and an obvious threat to any defence, Emile appeared to be on the brink of full international honours when a toe injury prevented his selection for England's prestige friendly with France. Although not as prolific as in previous seasons, he won the BBC "Goal of the Month" accolade for September with a classy solo effort against Arsenal, and also managed to turn Ramon Vega inside out before smashing home an unstoppable effort in the emotionally charged victory at home to Tottenham, on the night when the campaign to keep Martin O'Neill at Filbert Street reached a climax. Suffered with a back problem from Christmas onwards, which reduced his effectiveness right up to the Worthington Cup final, and continued to keep him out of the full England squad. A change in treatment saw him return to full speed to set up Tony Cottee's 200th league strike at White Hart Lane, leaving the pacy Sol Campbell in his wake, and further impressive games against Villa and West Ham saw him called up by Kevin Keegan for England's trip to Hungary. Finally, as a sub for Sunderland's Kevin Phillips, the big striker was called up for the last eight minutes in a 1-1 draw. Also played three times for the national U21 side.
