Having returned from injury, and having regained his prowess as a goalscorer par excellence at Liverpool in 1998-99, Robbie proceeded to shoot himself in the foot with some extraordinary examples of well-documented behaviour, in which he appeared to have allowed his personal views to get in the way of his footballing talent. Returning as a strike partner to Michael Owen against Charlton, he scored twice in a 3-3 draw to announce his presence once again amongst football's goalscoring elite, before going on to play twice more for England. A superb hat trick against Southampton in the 7-1 victory earned him the "Man of the Match" award, but thereafter his season declined into one in which he unnecessarily incurred the wrath of the Football Association's hierarchy. A player with consummate ability, especially when in sight of goal, he looks to return to the path which took him to glory in the first instance.
