Thoughts were now optimistic before Kevin Keegan's first game in charge. Kevin Keegan brought in Tim Sherwood and Andy Cole for this game. Paul Scholes was to make it a great game for Kevin Keegan as he netted the first hat-trick by an England player since Ian Wright in 1993. Alan Shearer and Andy Cole worked well together while scholes could push forward because of Tim Sherwood's defensive duties.
England started well with Shearer just firing wide. Soon later, Le Saux played a long ball which Cole layed off to Shearer. Jocek Back nicked the ball from Shearer's feet but straight into Scholes' path who chipped it over the keeper. After that Sherwood volleyed the ball just over the bar. England went two up after David Beckham crossed the ball from the right where Scholes put the ball into the net. TV replays show that Scholes handled the ball but neither referee or linesman saw it.
Whilst England were on the attack Trzeczek went down the left wing. He got to the byline and pulled the ball back for Brzeczek to pass it into Seaman's goal.
After teh break, the game got a bit scrappy. Both sides gave possesion away easily. Cole and Shearer worked well together but they were starved of quality service from the wings especially from McManaman. england had chance after change. Shearer had a shot cleared off the line, Cole shooting over the bar and Coel also screwed the ball wide with his left foot. With 20 minutes to go, Shearer flicked on a long throw by Neville and Scholes headed it past Matysek.
More chances went begging as Cole went inches wide, Scholes hit the post and Shearer headed just wide. But England had won and everyone was now optimistic about England qualifying.
