After the dissapionting reault in Stockholm last month, England needed to get their campaign started. Even without Adams, Ince and Beckham, many thought that a team with Sheare and Owen in ti would score goals.

The defence was hardly trouble but that was because Bulgaria weren't a good attacking force. Bulgaria came for a goalless draw and that is what they got.

In the first half, Owen squandered changes. In the third minute redknapp fed the ball over the top on his right foot but he was unable to connect. On the half-hour, the ball was held up by Scholes only for Owen to shoot wide. Just before half-time he was unable to capitalise on a deflected corner when he overran the ball into Zdravkov's hands. Campbell and Hinchcliffe also had chances but Zdravkov didn't have a proper save to make all game.

After half-time, England looked less like scoring. In 48 minutes, England created two chances. The first one, Shearer headed over the bar and then Sol Campbell also shot over the bar. By the end, it was looking more likely that Bulgaria would score. They had a couple of chances. Hristo Stoichkov forced an easy save in the first half and Marian Hristov produced another poor effort in the second-half.

England should be very disappointed with this result as previously, Bulgaria had conceded nine goals in their past two games.
