In 1994, Graham Taylor was unable to lead England to the World Cup, so while England were sat at home, Terry Venables had been given the job to prepare England for Euro 2000. This time England did not need to worry about qualifying as they were hosting the competition. A big deal was made of the fact that last time England won a major tournament, it was, held in England in '66.

Before the championships, many doubted that England would be a major force as main striker Shearer, though being in impressive form with Blackburn all season, hadn't produced the goods in international games. But Venables stuck with Alan and this proved vital in England's task.

England were in the same group as one of the favourites, Holland, local enemies Scotland and Switzerland.

The first game of England's tournament was against Switzerland and soon, Shearer paid back the managers faith in him by scoring after 23 minutes. Many though England could use this as a base to a good win, but Switzerland clawed back into it and they deserved the draw. Turkyilmaz equalised with a harsh penalty just seven minutes from time.

England's next game was against the Scots. It was a scrappy game in the first half, but after the break and the introduction of Jamie Redknapp saw England settle down. Shearer scored the first by heading in Gary Neville's cross.

The Scots fought back and 12 minutes from time they recieved a penalty. Gary McAllister steped up to take it and Seaman saved. On TV replays, the ball is moved slightly by the wind just before the penalty was taken. Tough life - isn't it. But that wasn't the end of the agony for Scotland. As Seaman saved, Anderton broke with the ball. Gascoigne recieved the ball, he flicked it over Colin Hendry's head and volleyed it into Scotland's net. That goal became the goal of the tournament and Gazza celebrated with a mocking of the Dentist Chair.

After this, the English players and supporters were on a high and supprisingly, Holland weren't much of a challenge. England scored four goals in about an hour with Shearer and Sheringham getting two each. Kluivert grabbed a late consolation goal which meant that Scotland, to England's delight, would not go any further in the competiton.

Spain were England's opponants in the quarter finals. England were outplayed for most of the game and were lucky when Silinas goal was wrongly disallowed for offside. The match went to a penalty shoot-out. David Seaman made two crucial saves while Stuart Pearce scored England's third penalty.

So that left England and Germany to play in the semi finals. surely England would get revenge for what happened in Italia 90. Shearer gave England a perfect start when he scored a header after just 3 minutes. Just 13 minutes later stefan Kuntz equalised and nothing could separate the two teams. Once again, it came down to penalties. Both teams scored 5 and it was now sudden death. Gareth Southgate stepped up and hit a weak shot only for Kopke to save. That was the end of England in Euro 96 and if things couldn't get any worse, we had to watch while Germany picked up the trophy again.
