Club: Tottenham Hotspur

1998-99 was another terrific season for this accomplished central defender, whose value to both Tottenham and England increased with every performance. At the heart of Spurs' defence, showing a high level of commitment and competitive attitude which was second to none, Sol faced some of the best attackers both at Premiership and world level, and emerged as one of the most complete central defenders to be found. His strength and pace, complimented by a maturity which saw him embrace his responsibilities as club captain, were just two of his most notable attributes. But, his superior aerial ability, remains his outstanding trademark, along with his tremendous recovery powers. The campaign saw another side of his game with eight league and cup goals. Among the most memorable came the two at home to Manchester United in December, when deep into injury time, he salvaged a much-deserved point, Spurs finishing the game all square at 2-2. Snatching a result from games that Tottenham looked certain to lose was also memorably demonstrated in September when, again, deep into injury time, he scored the equaliser in the 3-3 draw with Leeds. In April, he was recognised by his fellow professionals when being voted into the Premiership "Team of the Season" at the annual PFA awards, and with interest in this highly-rated defender growing both at home and abroad and expected to further increase as the side come under the spotlight in Europe in 1999-2000, it is little surprise that George Graham is anxious for him to sign an extension to the remaining two years left on his current contract, an anxiety shared by the Tottenham faithful. Sol was injured on the opening day of the season which led to him missing the next ten matches which was a blow to both Sol and his team. Without a doubt the England defender is one of the best in the country and it is not difficult to see why so many clubs are willing to offer huge sums to try and prise him from White Hart Lane. Since his return he has been an ever present and forming a good partnership with new signing Chris Perry.
