There have been many great goals in the European Championships. But here
are ten of the best.
| Number
5: John Jensen |
| When?
Denmark v Germany, Euro 92 Final.. |
| How?
Flemming Polvleson, on the right, pulled the ball back for John Jensen
to unleash a powerful drive past Illgner. It was the first goal as
Denmark beat Germany 2-0 in the Final. |
| Why so Good?
A goal to defeat the overwhelming favourites Germany for one of the
biggest shocks in football history. |
| Number
4: Michel Platini |
| When?
France v Spain, Euro 84 Final. |
| How?
A trademark free-kick from Platini, he bent the ball round the Spanish
wall and under goalkeeper Arconada. It was Platini's ninth goal of
the tournament as France went onto win 2-0. |
| Why so Good?
Platini was the player of the tournament and it was apt that he scored
in the Final to break the Championship goalscoring record. |
| Number
3: Marco Van Basten |
| When?
Holland v USSR, Euro 88 Final. |
| How?
Van Basten, on the right flank, met Arnold Muhren's high, looping
centre from the left with a fantastic right-foot volley from the tightest
of angles that left goalkeeper Dasaev stunned. It was Holland's second
goal! |
| Why so Good?
Van Basten's fifth of the tournament was one of the most spectacular
and dramatic goals in European football history. |
| Number
2: Oliver Bierhoff |
| When?
Germany v Czech Republic, Euro 96 Final |
| How?
The 'Golden Goal' that won the tournament scored after four minutes
of extra-time. Bierhodd's left-foot shot from the edge of the box
went through goalkeeper Kouba's hands and rolled in off the post.
|
| Why so Good?
The first ever Euro golden goal. And in the Final too, it couldn't
have been more dramatic! |
